Apple Lightning – what it means for audiophiles

by: David

Cypher Labs USB Audio line in capable AlgoRhythm Solo is ready for you when you finally get your hands on a new iPod or iPhone.

They announced it, you want it, we’ve got it covered. It took a lot of reading through the Apple technical specs today (what else did I have to do?). Until I have an actual iPhone 5 in my hands, I won't be entirely comfortable and may have to eat my words, but I feel comfortable talking about the new products and the impact to our customers.

The introduction of the new Lightning connector is a big change for owners of docks and amplifiers. For the new slate of Apple devices, only digital USB line out docks will provide audiophile quality sound. The new connector is required for accessories to authenticate to the Apple device. Owners or prospective owners of the AlgoRhythm Solo can take advantage of high resolution audio from existing Apple products and the new iPod, iPhone, Nano and even the Shuffle. Because the Cypher Labs AlgoRhythm Solo received USB audio data from the Apple USB A cable and processes iAP over USB, the AlgoRhythm Solo is ready for the new devices. Just use the Lightning connector cable that comes with the new Apple product. An adapter is not needed.

Cypher Labs is already in the process of producing a new short Lightning cable and will make it available to dealers, such as ALO Audio, Mixwave, etc. We suggest browsing your favorite dealer's site for the cable once we announce it here. DIY’ers will be out of luck for making their own cables since only authorized makers can get the Lightning hardware.

If customers buy an AlgoRhythm Solo after the release of the iPhone 5 we will either include our new cable in the retail package or make it available, once the cable is produced. Note that even the cable must be certified by Apple. This will take time, but at least you know that we are on it! Expect most cable makers to take at least 4-6 weeks before production volumes of cables are on the market. You waited this long for the new Apple gear, you can wait a bit for a custom cable.

For listeners not using a USB dock, like the portable AlgoRhythm Solo, there is bad news. The Lightning to 30 pin adapter does not provided analog line-out. It’s best to pair your headphone amplifier with an AlgoRhythm Solo to hear the best quality music from your new Apple device.
